چکیده

We have carried out detailed rock magnetic and paleomagnetic studies on a suite of four deep-sea sediment cores from Indonesia and the Philippine Islands, which form a transect from 6.3°N to 10.6°S. The cores have average sediment accumulation rates of 35-65 cm/kyr that all yield high-resolution paleomagnetic secular variation (PSV) records. The PSV records contain 44 correlatable inclination and declination features that corroborate the individual PSV records and indicate that they are all continuous with no significant stratigraphic gaps. Thirty-four AMS radiocarbon dates provide a highresolution time stratigraphic framework for the PSV records, which extend from ~018,000 Years BP. These are the first high-resolution Holocene PSV records ever recovered from anywhere on Earth within 17° of the Equator (almost 1/3 of the Earth’s surface area). Statistical analysis of the Holocene PSV records indicates that they have ΔI anomalies of -5° to -9°, consistent with 5 MA averaged results. The strong similarity in ΔI anomaly pattern of Holocene and longer-term (5 Ma) averaged PSV data suggest that the dynamo process causing the anomaly is largely described by Holocene PSV. By contrast, the Holocene PSV records have VGP angular dispersions that are significantly lower than 5 MA averaged PSV data yet significantly higher than PSV data averaged over only the last few thousand years. This difference indicates that whatever dynamo process causes the overall directional variability of the Earth’s magnetic field is not totally described by recent (last few thousand year) PSV or even by late Quaternary (last ~20,000 year) PSV.

Opal burial in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean over the last 30 ka: Implications for glacial-interglacial changes in the ocean silicon cycle

[1] The Silicic Acid Leakage Hypothesis (SALH) suggests that, during glacial periods, excess silicic acid was transported from the Southern Ocean to lower latitudes, which favored diatom production over coccolithophorid production and caused a drawdown of atmospheric CO2. Downcore records of Th-normalized opal fluxes and Pa/Th ratios from seven equatorial Atlantic cores were used to reconstruct...

Response of the Equatorial Pacific Seasonal Cycle to Orbital Forcing

The response of the equatorial Pacific Ocean’s seasonal cycle to orbital forcing is explored using idealized simulations with a coupled atmosphere–ocean GCM in which eccentricity, obliquity, and the longitude of perihelion are altered while other boundary conditions are maintained at preindustrial levels. The importance of ocean dynamics in the climate response is investigated using additional ...

Nitrogen isotopic evidence for deglacial changes in nutrient supply in the eastern equatorial Pacific

[1] The Eastern Equatorial Pacific (EEP) is a high nutrient–low chlorophyll region of the ocean. Downcore nitrogen isotope records from the EEP have been previously interpreted as a direct reflection of changes in nutrient consumption. However, the observed changes in sedimentary dN since the last glacial maximum have no coherent relationship with export productivity or an inferred variation in...

Redefinition of the Blake Event

We have recovered four new records of the paleomagnetic field variability within Oxygen Isotope Stage 5 from deep-sea sediment cores of the Blake/Bahama Outer Ridge, western North Atlantic Ocean. These cores contain reproducible evidence of the Blake Event and are located within 300 km of cores used by Smith and Foster (1969) to define the Blake Event. Our new paleomagnetic records have both re...

A first look at past sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Indian Ocean from Mg/Ca in foraminifera

[1] Sea surface temperature (SST) for the central equatorial Indian Ocean, has been reconstructed over the last 137 kyr, from Mg/Ca of the planktonic foraminiferal species Globigerinoides ruber. According to our record the equatorial Indian Ocean SST was 2.1 C colder during the last glacial maximum as compared to present times. The data further shows that the surface equatorial Indian Ocean was...
